Places I’ve called home and why I like where I am now: I was born and raised in Des Moines, Iowa which is actually a great town despite what you might think of Iowa. I moved to Ames to attend Iowa State University after high school, where I spent the next 7 years of my life. After college I took the opportunity to move to Colorado Springs for CTS and it was a complete change, trading cornfields for mountains! Recently, I moved to the newest CTS Regional Training Center in Tucson, Arizona to head up the Multisport Division, and so far so good!
Favorite Quote: “Strength does not come from physical capacity, it comes from indomitable will.” Mahatma Gandhi
Education High School: Southeast Polk High, Runnells Iowa
College/University: Iowa State University
Favorite subjects/courses: Exercise Physiology Labs
Coaching Background I decided to pursue training and education as a coach because: I love helping people with areas of their life that are important to them, and sport has been very important to me. So most of the people I get the chance to work with are like-minded and similarly driven which helps make being a coach a fun and challenging profession.
I decided to join CTS because: I want to become the best coach that I possibly can in order to help athletes achieve goals that they previously thought impossible. There is no better environment in the world to do that than CTS.
What I liked best about the CTS coaching residency program: The availability of resources. You can’t beat learning your craft from the best, most successful coaches in the world.
The best thing about being a coach is: Helping good people achieve their goals and maintain healthy lifestyles.
My coaching philosophy is: To encourage athletes to achieve their potential through hard work, determination, and discipline. Sport, even if it is your job, should always be enjoyable and fit into a well balanced life, and a coach should help you maintain that enjoyment and balance.
Coaching accomplishments: I’ve coached dozens of athletes to their first Ironman finish, helped one athlete progress from age-group competitor to pro triathlete, and coached one woman to reach a three year goal of winning her age-group at the Chicago Triathlon.
My coaching goals: Continue to help athletes reach goals above and beyond what they thought possible when they first started training or competing.
My area of coaching expertise is: Triathlon training
The best coach I ever had was: I had two that were pretty influential; My dad was my high school swimming coach and he definitely imparted on me a sense of work ethic and perspective. Mike Suggett was my high school track coach and really taught me the importance of being a coach who athletes want to work hard for and listen to.
Distinguished athletes I’ve coached: Craig Alexander, Pro Triathlete Eric Peterson, Elite Triathlete Nathan White, NCAA D1 track and cross country Chris Bagg, Pro Triathlete
Athletic Career Highlights When I started sports and what got me started: My parents were very athletic when I was young, and I would beg to go on training runs with my dad before I was 5. By the time I was 5, I had already run 5k road races with my mom (have pictures to prove it). My dad was the swimming and track coach at a local high school, so running and swimming were the sports I chose to focus on.
Athletic accomplishments: ISU intramural champion: Curling, Ultimate Frisbee, Badminton, Pickleball, Innertube Water Basketball Two-time Ironman Wisconsin Finisher (both top-10 collegiate national championship places)
My near and far-term athletic goals: I haven’t raced Ironman since I was 21 or 22 years old, and I’d like to think that I could improve on those initial times with the additional years of experience. I’d also like to run a fast stand-alone marathon someday.
Activities I do for fun and exercise: Any city-league sport I can convince office-mates to join, cycling, running, table-tennis, darts, broomball.
My favorite race/competition and why: Corn Carnival Cornman Triathlon, Gladbrook Iowa or Quad Cities Triathlon, Davenport Iowa. Both are small-town, grassroots races that have great people behind them, competing at them, and supporting them. These are also the races that I first competed in, and the first places that I won triathlon events.
My best athletic experience: Racing Ironman Wisconsin the first year of its existence. The location and the crowd support made for a very memorable day.
Miscellaneous When I’m not coaching or training I like to: I play with my dog, read, watch movies, play poker, rec league softball/dodgeball, and race my Mustang with the SCCA.
Something non-sports related that no one would guess about me: I have a 5-year degree in Landscape Architecture that I will likely never use in professional practice.
If I wasn’t a coach, I would be: Possibly a Landscape Architect (have the degree), or some sort of physician.
“Bad” food I just can’t resist: I am a complete candy fiend. If it sits on my desk for more than 2 hours, I consider it a real miracle.
My favorite psych-up music is: Again, depends on the race but Jay-Z or Cake are pretty common denominators.
My favorite book is: So far? It would be a tough call between The Fountainhead by Ayn Rand, and A Prayer for Owen Meany by John Irving.
My favorite website is/websites are: Letsrun.com and ESPN.com
