Coaching Background

I decided to pursue training and education as a coach because:
I was always fascinated at how the human body worked, so I decided that I wanted to learn as much about it as possible. Eventually, I took this to my CTS internship and was able to apply my knowledge to working with a wide variety of athletes.

I decided to join CTS because:
CTS has a great reputation thanks to the high caliber of coaches who work there, and I really like their strong backgrounds in exercise physiology—this strengthens the core knowledge of the company.

My coaching philosophy is:
I believe in an evidence-based approach to coaching. I don’t think an athlete can be coached without a thorough understanding of the “why” behind everything I ask that athlete to do. Knowing what to do is half of the battle, but the other half is in knowing why you do what you do every day.

Coaching accomplishments:
Helping runners qualify for the Boston Marathon, coaching an adventure racer to a solo win, and coaching a cyclist to a National Championship.

My coaching goals:
To provide the best coaching for my athletes and to help them reach their goals, but most of all I want to make sure athletes enjoy what they are doing. If you don’t enjoy what you do, there’s no point in training to become better at it.

My area of coaching expertise is:
My area of expertise is in applying sports nutrition principles to everyday training and to various types of racing.

My strongest coaching quality is:
My strongest coaching quality is my easy going, laid back attitude that helps athletes feel comfortable asking questions and providing me with feedback. And then I respond with a decisive approach to different aspects of their training.

Athletic Career Highlights

When I started (my sport) and what got me started:
I started mountain biking and cyclocross racing at age 14 and continued with mountain biking through high school and college. I started adventure racing during my sophomore year in college when a friend asked if I’d like to do a 48 hour adventure race – that was before I realized just how far 150 miles was, especially for a first-timer!

Athletic accomplishments:
My biggest athletic accomplishment to date was being fortunate enough to travel to Belgium to be part of Team USA and compete in Duathlon World Championships. Experiencing the same venue, support, and crowds that elite athletes experience was a chance of a lifetime, and I’ll never forget it.

What (my sport) means to me:
Mountain biking is a part of “my sport” (Adventure Racing), and the best part about mountain biking is being able to hop on my bike any time and just ride for hours in the mountains. It means getting away from all of the stress associated with everyday life and just getting in touch with the outdoors.

My near and far-term athletic goals:
My long-term goals are to become more competitive in mountain bike racing and try my hand at long-distance races such as the Durango MTB 100 (2007) to see how I fare in that type of event. My short-term goals are to improve my technical abilities and my power above lactate threshold.

Activities I do for fun and exercise:
Trail running, climbing, paddling, skiing (downhill and backcountry)

Pet peeves:
My biggest pet peeve is finding trash (or other organic matter) on the trails left by other careless trail/forest/park users.

I get pumped up for competition by:
I try to stay relaxed for competitions because I find that I don’t respond as well to typical motivational practices.

Miscellaneous

When I’m not coaching or training I like to:
lounge around, eat, play with my dog

If I wasn’t a coach, I would be:
I would be a ski bum.

My favorite meal/dessert is:
My favorite meal is any type of pesto pasta and my favorite dessert is any chocolate cake or mint ice cream.

“Bad” food I just can’t resist:
Chocolate chip cookies

In my car you’ll find:
an old air freshener hanging from my rear view mirror from 4 years ago.
The oldest piece of sports equipment I am still using:

In 2020, I plan to be:
a business owner and an avid skier.
