Places I’ve called home and why I like where I am now: Syracuse NY, Buffalo NY, Chapel Hill NC, and now Asheville NC. We love Asheville and have been here since 1999. It’s a great town. Small town feel with easy access to larger cities and, of course, some of the best trails and roads on the East Coast!
Favorite Quote: The spirit, the will to win, and the will to excel are the things that endure. These qualities are so much more important than the events that occur. -- Vincent Lombardi

Coaching
Background
I decided to pursue training and education as a coach because: I have been around sports all my life, or at least what I remember—first as a swimmer, then as a cyclist. I began coaching in the summers in high school with my club swim team. It all just snow balled into a full-time job after that.
I decided to join CTS because: I was looking for a means to coach beyond working for a college. CTS had and still has the best in the business for endurance coaching, and I wanted to be part of that.
I like coaching for CTS because: There is a great network of coaches and support staff that can help you when you are stuck!
My most rewarding coaching experience: My first swim meet at Colgate College where I was the only coach representing the team. One of the younger girls did her personal best in the 100 meter breaststroke… The light in her eyes and excitement when she saw the time was one of the best experiences I have had as a coach… It will stick with me forever.
The best thing about being a coach is: Its like teaching… very rewarding helping and watching others achieve what they once thought they could not.
My coaching philosophy is: Work hard but have fun while doing it.
Coaching accomplishments: Pan American Games qualifiers in swimming and mountain biking Master’s Worlds and National Podiums Professional NORBA National Podiums USA National Downhill member U-23 National Champion
My coaching goals: Help all my athletes push to a new and higher limit… And then push that some more!
My area of coaching expertise is: Cycling and swimming. I really enjoy working with mountain-bike racers though.
My strongest coaching quality is: Application of the science into the real world. Making life and training blend.
The best coach I ever had was: Kenn Neff, my high school swimming coach.
The best advice I ever got from him/her was: Keep you head down and get your work done ahead of time.
Distinguished athletes I’ve coached: Chris Herndon: US National Team 2006, 2007 Downhill. 2007 US Pro National
Dual Slalom Champion Cole Banger: US National Team 2007 Downhill. 2007 US Pro National Downhill
Champion Chris Monteleone: US National U-23 Team Trek/VW Southeast Regional Team 2004-present Caitlyn Tuel, Trek/VW East Coast Regional Team and former U-23 National
Champ Chris Hinshaw, Pan American Team Member
Athletic Career
Highlights
When I started (my sport) and what
got me started:
Swimming began, according to my mom, at about 3 when I went in the neighbors
pool.
Athletic accomplishments: National Qualifier in the pool NORBA National Podiums at the Semi-Pro level
What (my sport) means to me: Cycling is now really my main sport… I just love getting outside and away from everything. It is my release.
What I would have done differently in my competitive days if I knew what I know now: Worked a bit less and rested more.
What I would not change: Nothing… I learned from what I did wrong and remember fondly what I did right.
Activities I do for fun and exercise: Ride all types of bikes, hike with my wife and daughter.
My favorite race/competition and why: Any race held at Holiday Valley in Ellicotville NY… Just a great trail system, great promoters, and a great coffee shop and brewery in town!
My best athletic experience: Road trip in 2005 to NORBA nationals in West Virgina and Vermont with the Trek/VW crew. Lost of good racing and fun.
My worst athletic experience: Too many to recount… Ahh, the dreaded bonk!
My most embarrassing athletic experience: Being made to wear a girl’s swimsuit when I forgot mine one day in highschool.
My strongest athletic quality is: I’m stubborn… So I don’t like to quit.
Pet peeves: People who aren’t on time.
I get pumped up for competition by: Relaxing and thinking about a nice burrito afterwards.
Miscellaneous When I’m not coaching or training I like to: Spend time with my wife and daughter… They are everything to me!
The person I most admire in the world is: My dad… He’s a quite Englishman… Always observing… Always generous… I hope to be like him someday.
The mentor who influenced me the most is: Kenn Neff, my high school swimming coach.
The best advice I ever got from him/her was: He instilled that the motivation must come from within me.
I can be characterized as: A focused, quite person.
If I wasn’t a coach, I would be: A rally car racer… if I could afford it.
